Classes

You can register for classes with your deposit of credit, check or by:
1) credit card by phone
2) coming to studio to fill out a class form or,
3) you can download the form at each class below and mail it in.

• All classes must be paid in full prior to class time.
• A minimum deposit must be paid to be considered registered for a class.
• Check each class for extra supplies and/or pre-prep work.
• Classes do NOT include glazing and firing unless specifically stated in the description.
• Class times are posted for each class.
• Any missed classes must be made up within the six-week session.

Pottery Classes

Pottery: Wheel Throwing $180

Skill Level: Beginner & Continuing

Description:
This is a six-session course for adults who want to learn how to “throw” ware on a potter’s wheel. Techniques will emphasize centering the clay on the wheel; opening the clay to create the initial wall and base; thinning and shaping the wall; and throwing a complete form. Students will also learn about the various kinds of forms that can be thrown on a wheel; cylinders, open forms, cones, spheres, waisted forms, showing how to raise them and explaining what goes wrong, when and why. You will learnmany techniques beyond throwing itself. For Example: how to alter a thrown; how to make edges, ridges, ribs and lids; how to use calipers for measuring; how to produce quantities of identical forms; how to create flat forms; how to throw large scale pieces; and how to throw a series of small forms from a single large lump of clay.

*Tuesday evening is an advanced class. Students need to have completed at least 2 sessions prior to this session in order to be able to complete the projects. This six weeks will focus on "Bakeware for the Holidays" projects.

Notes:
Class fee includes 25 lbs. of choice of clay, glazing, firing and supplies used in class. Students may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes. Students need to bring a water bucket and may wish to purchase a kit of basic pottery tools.
A $90.00 non-refundable deposit required at time of registration. The balance will be payable when the class begins.

Special Note:
Our overhead costs have increased tremendously with our move to a new location. In order to hold costs down, we have included a minimal cost increase in class fees but is limited to class time only. If you would like full access to studio time and firing, course fee is $210.

Beginning Sculpture: The Fundamentals of Handbuilding
8 weeks • $250

• Monday Evenings ­February 22-April 12 ­ 5:30-8pm

Skill Level: Beginner

Description:
An introductory course to the three handbuilding techniques: pinching, coiling and slab building. This is a great class to help the student decide which type of handbuilding they enjoy most. The student should have at least three finished unglazed pieces by the end of this course and can pick up their fired objects on what would be class 9 day.

    Class 1: Pinching
    Making small pots using only your hands, getting used to working clay.
    Class 2: Pinching Continued
    Adding pinched forms together and adding pinched sculptural elements (suggested form: small animal).
    Class 3: Coiling
    Making pots using rolled out coils of clay.
    Class 4: Coiling Continued
    Adding pots together to make a sculptural vessel and adding coiled decoration.
    Class 5: Slab Building
    Various ways of making slabs from clay.
    Class 6: Slab Building Continued
    Adding slabs together to make a small box; using pinching and coiling to add decorative elements.
    Classes 7&8: Work days

Intermediate Sculpture: Handbuilding Projects
8 weeks • $250

Skill Level: Continuing

Description:
Using techniques learned in the Fundamentals of Handbuilding class, the student will complete finished glazed projects designed to help the student master design and other essential techniques. Students can decide to do either Option 1 or Option 2 or both. Either option can be taught in the same class. The student can pick up their fired and glazed pieces on what would be class 7 day.

    Option 1
    Bring a plant to class to take inspiration from, make your idea of the perfect planter for it. Take into consideration every element of the plant, its size, shape, what it represents, get creative!

    Option 2
    Bring a photograph of a favorite animal or pet, make a caricature sculpture of it's likeness. Take into consideration every aspect of that animal, it's personality, daily activities, we are not looking for a clay replica of your animal, we want the essence of that animal to shine through your piece.

    Class 1: Sketching, making small models, making a decision and prep work.
    Class 2-7: Work days (pieces will be bisque fired).
    Class 8: Glazing

*This class can be taken again if the student only wants to tackle one option at a time.

Advanced Sculpture: Handbuilding on Your Own

Description:
The student has mastered the handbuilding techniques of their choice and has a desire to create projects on their own. Students can decide to do Option 1 or 2 or both. Both can be taught in the same class. Students can pick up their finished and glazed projects on what would be class 7 day.

    Option 1
    Using techniques learned in the Fundamentals of Handbuilding class to make a group or series of small to medium sculptures which we will fire and glaze.

    Option 2
    Using techniques learned in the Fundamentlals of Handbuilding class to make large scale pots.

    Class 1: Sketching, making small models, making a decision and prep work.
    Class 2-7: Work days (pieces will be bisque fired).
    Class 8: Glazing

Get a feel for this intriguing medium and learn the basics of how to handle it. Once fired, you will have authentic sterling silver jewelry pieces. In this course, you will be able to make a pendant and bracelet links or earring dangles.

Introduction to Fused Glass $55

Description:
Learn to “paint” with glass. In this introduction to the glass medium, you will learn how to “fuse” glass pieces and particles into a single solid composition. We’ll be making 2 pieces with cut colored glass and granular “frit” on this day.

Glass Fusing Extended Workshop $200

Description:
For those who want to delve deeper into glass fusing, this is a six-session course for adults who want to learn the more advanced methods of working with glass. Techniques will emphasize grinding and sawing; glass casting; sugar frit paste; glass weaving; texturizing; dichroic; and pate de veurre. Students will also learn how to prepare slump molds and firing techniques.

Notes:
Class fee includes glass and frit used in class. Students may want to bring a pair of gloves to wear for the handling of glass edges. Each student will need their own set of basic tools which may be purchased at the studio at a student discount.

Mosaics Classes

Byzantine Classical Mosaics$200


Wednesdays ­ March 10-April 14

Skill Level: Beginner & Continuing

Description:
This class is intended for beginning students who want to learn the process of creating a mosaic, and for continuing students who want to learn authentic Roman and Byzantine mosaic techniques. Students will work with stone marble to break their own tiles and will learn to create their own concreate base, cutting, adhesion, tile layout, color theory and grouting.

Notes:
Class fee includes tile and materials used in class. Students may want to bring a pair of gloves to wear for the handling of sharp edges. Each student will need their own set of basic tools which may be purchased at the studio at a student discount.

Ceramics Classes
Casey is currently converting all our previous ceramics classes into kits that you can take home to complete and then return to the studio for firing. We will post each kit as they are completed.
