Description:
This is a six-session course for adults who want to learn how
to throw ware on a potters wheel. Techniques will emphasize
centering the clay on the wheel; opening the clay to create the
initial wall and base; thinning and shaping the wall; and throwing
a complete form. Students will also learn about the various kinds
of forms that can be thrown on a wheel; cylinders, open forms,
cones, spheres, waisted forms, showing how to raise them and explaining
what goes wrong, when and why. You will learnmany techniques beyond
throwing itself. For Example: how to alter a thrown; how to make
edges, ridges, ribs and lids; how to use calipers for measuring;
how to produce quantities of identical forms; how to create flat
forms; how to throw large scale pieces; and how to throw a series
of small forms from a single large lump of clay.
*Tuesday evening is an advanced class. Students need to have completed
at least 2 sessions prior to this session in order to be able
to complete the projects. This six weeks will focus on "Bakeware
for the Holidays" projects.
Notes:
Class fee includes 25 lbs. of choice of clay, glazing, firing
and supplies used in class. Students may want to bring an apron
or wear old clothes. Students need to bring a water bucket and
may wish to purchase a kit of basic pottery tools.

Beginning Sculpture: The Fundamentals of Handbuilding

Description:
An introductory course to the three handbuilding techniques: pinching,
coiling and slab building. This is a great class to help the student
decide which type of handbuilding they enjoy most. The student
should have at least three finished unglazed pieces by the end
of this course and can pick up their fired objects on what would
be class 9 day.
Class 1: Pinching
Making small pots using only your hands, getting used to working
clay.
Class 2: Pinching Continued
Adding pinched forms together and adding pinched sculptural elements
(suggested form: small animal).
Class 3: Coiling
Making pots using rolled out coils of clay.
Class 4: Coiling Continued
Adding pots together to make a sculptural vessel and adding coiled
decoration.
Class 5: Slab Building
Various ways of making slabs from clay.
Class 6: Slab Building Continued
Adding slabs together to make a small box; using pinching and
coiling to add decorative elements.
Classes 7&8: Work days
Notes:

Intermediate Sculpture: Handbuilding Projects

Skill Level: Continuing
Description:
Using techniques learned in the Fundamentals of Handbuilding class,
the student will complete finished glazed projects designed to
help the student master design and other essential techniques.
Students can decide to do either Option 1 or Option 2 or both.
Either option can be taught in the same class. The student can
pick up their fired and glazed pieces on what would be class 7
day.
Option 1
Bring a plant to class to take inspiration from, make your idea
of the perfect planter for it. Take into consideration every element
of the plant, its size, shape, what it represents, get creative!
Option 2
Bring a photograph of a favorite animal or pet, make a caricature
sculpture of it's likeness. Take into consideration every aspect
of that animal, it's personality, daily activities, we are not
looking for a clay replica of your animal, we want the essence
of that animal to shine through your piece.
Class 1: Sketching, making small models, making a decision and prep work.
Class 2-7: Work days (pieces will be bisque fired).
Class 8: Glazing
*This class can be taken again if the student only wants to tackle
one option at a time.

For those who want to delve deeper into glass fusing, this is
a six-session course for adults who want to learn the more advanced
methods of working with glass. Techniques will emphasize grinding
and sawing; glass casting; sugar frit paste; glass weaving; texturizing;
dichroic; and pate de veurre. Students will also learn how to
prepare slump molds and firing techniques.
Notes:

want to bring a pair of gloves to wear for the handling of glass
edges. Each student will need their own set of basic tools which

Description:
This class is intended for beginning students who want to learn
the process of creating a mosaic, and for continuing students
who want to learn authentic Roman and Byzantine mosaic techniques.
Students will work with stone marble to break their own tiles
and will learn to create their own concreate base, cutting, adhesion,
tile layout, color theory and grouting.
